Where We Fly To
A story of friendship and chasing dreams, and what to do with your life when it all comes crashing down…
Five years ago – Fresh out of college, Meredith meets Reece in a coffee shop in San Francisco. They start both a business and a relationship. And together with Austen, Meredith’s best friend from Stanford, they see their startup quickly make them billionaires and crypto superstars.
Two years later – Their company collapses amid accusations of criminality and dirty dealing, Meredith and Reece’s relationship is all but over, her friendship with Austen has atrophied. Thanks to a shadowy arrangement Reece has with the government, they avoid prosecution, but on the day their freedom’s assured, a former employee launches a shooting spree—Austen is killed, Reece is seriously injured, only Meredith is left unscathed.
Today – Meredith is a digital nomad, always travelling, haunted by the loss of her best friend, avoiding home where people are still angry and bitter. But she’s exhausted by the weight of the past, and in a mountain resort in Austria, she finally agrees to a series of interviews with Daniel Anderson, the journalist who helped expose their company. It's a chance to reflect on what happened and what was lost, but Anderson is paranoid, feeling he’s being watched, followed. When he goes missing and Meredith herself feels under threat, it’s also a reminder that she can’t run away from the past forever. And somewhere in that past is Reece, whose carelessness brought them down once before, and whose invisible hand she fears might be at play now. She’d never imagined speaking to him again, but when the chance for a final reckoning arises, Meredith is finally forced to question everything she’s believed since the day of the shooting.
Where We Fly To is a novel about the loss of youth and the promise that went with it, about friendship and grief, and about how to move on with life when you’re utterly cast adrift.
