Dark Flag

"Dark Flag" was Kevin Wignall's fifth novel. Sam Webster is an intelligence operative whose job is to facilitate terrorist acts for strategic ends. When he sees the true horror of his actions, he quits. He's living in Paris when Neil Todd, an old university friend, gets in touch from Copenhagen, in need of help. Another friend, and former MI6 colleague, puts pressure on him to go, but Sam isn't in the Danish capital long before Todd is murdered. As Sam looks into the case, pressure is put on him to leave the city, by the police, by the CIA, by his own former colleagues. But it seems that Todd had chanced upon damning evidence relating to 9/11, and that far from being just another conspiracy, this had been important enough to get him killed. Even as his own position becomes more perilous, Sam is haunted by memories of his old life, and determined to uncover the truth of Neil Todd's death, no matter what the cost.
"Dark Flag" was first published as "Lipun Varjo" in Finnush by Arktinen Banaani (2010). The book was very well received in Finland where it drew comparisons with Graham Greene and Albert Camus. It was also applauded for its handling of the 9/11 material. This didn't stop conspiracy theorists taking the opportunity to confront the author during his succesful tour of the country in October 2010 - among other things, he was accused of working for the CIA. K has maintained that the book isn't intended to promote a particular theory.
It was then published by Heyne in Germany in January 2012, using the title, "Zuruck bleibt der Tod" (roughly, "What Remains After Death").
Initially, there was no English-language version of the book published, though it's now available as an e-book worldwide.
