Return to Among the Dead

Barry Forshaw's review in The Daily Express got off to an interesting start by claiming that I'm

"a Belgian who lives in the West of England"

Tempted to run with that one, not least for the chance to be included in that list of famous Belgians, but I'm afraid the truth will out - I'm English. Forshaw's review went on to say -

"Among The Dead is a vigorously written, unsettling thriller. A lucid and atmospheric piece of crime fiction. We're taken into complex moral territory - and that ambitiousness on the author's part is handled by Wignall with real authority."

Sarah Broadhurst in The Bookseller, said -

"This man certainly knows how to get inside the mind of his protagonists. With his sparse, stylish prose, he is definitely someone to watch. This is a haunting tale of student secrets that have terrible repercussions in adult life. I loved it."

Many thanks.

Thanks also to The Scotsman -

"Wignall grips the reader with empathy for the guilty of conscience."

And to The Mirror -

"a superbly executed thriller."

And finally, to Scarlett Thomas in The Independent on Sunday -

"The only point in using this tired old plot would be to try to do something very original with it. Wignall doesn't bother... it's impossible to care about any of this. The repetitive, banal prose doesn't help. By the time this becomes at all interesting, most people will surely have given up on it."

Now, I know what you're thinking, and yes, Ms Thomas has met me but it was only once and I really don't think I could have made an impression of any kind, let alone a bad one. Think what you will - I prefer to believe she simply didn't like the book!
